South Actress Samantha Special Interview

South Actress Samantha Special Interview

"Everyone only sees what i write to Siddharth", says actor Samantha when questioned on 'good friend' Siddharth's absence on the night she won two Best Actor (Female) awards. In a tete-a-tete, Samantha talks about awards, her equation with Siddharth and more...

The two awards at Filmfare must be quite special for you?
Oh! yes. It's such a great honour for me to be in the same category as Revathy madam, who achieved a similar feat, years ago. I love her work and have always looked up to her. This feeling is too good to be true.

While working on Neethane En Ponvasantham (NEP) or Eega, did you expect to win awards?
I don't work for awards. I work on a project only if I find the script interesting. These films pushed me as an actor and I had very demanding roles. I was excited because I love being pushed out of my comfort zone. When I went home every day after shooting for these films, I had a sense of satisfaction as they required me to challenge myself.

What do awards mean to you?
I've always taken my job very seriously. I know that one bad performance and I'll be sent home. I don't approach my work, thinking I've delivered hits in the past, so all is well. I always work keeping the fear of the future in mind. Awards don't change my attitude towards work. For me, they are a source of encouragement. A film that you've worked really hard on might not do well at the box office. But if it gets appreciated by fetching you awards or recognition from the audience and the industry, then you will feel encouraged to take risks.

This is the second award you've received for a Gautham Menon film. What did he and Rajamouli have to say to you?
Gautham Menon was very happy for me. He believes that I've arrived as an actress only with NEP, and that's a huge compliment. We both agree that I was very raw in Ye Maya Chesave and that I had a lot to learn. In NEP, he could see a lot of change in me; I would get things instantly. And working with Rajamouli was a different experience altogether. He's a taskmaster and wants every shot to be perfect. When he 'okays' a shot, you know you've done something right.

Looks like you missed Siddharth on the awards night. You tweeted saying you wished he was there...
Why don't people see the tweets I sent to others saying stuff like, 'hugs and kisses' and 'muaahs'? Everyone only sees what I write to Siddharth and read between the lines! I'm a very affectionate person and always say 'hugs and kisses' to everyone. I don't have anything to hide; it's out for everyone to see. Sid's one of my closest friends and I wish he was there at the awards night. My family, friends and everyone else were there. Sid was the only one missing.

Your date calendar in 2013 seems to be full of films in Telugu...
Yes, but by the end of the year, I will start working on more Tamil films. Telugu movies might probably take a backseat.

Sonna Puriyathu Movie Review

Sonna Puriyathu Movie Review

Film: Sonna Puriyadhu
Starring: Mirchi Siva, Vasunthara, Manobala, Meera Krishnan
Director: Krishnan Jayaraj
Producer: Saandika Amarnath
Banner: 360 degree film corp
Music: Yathish Mahadev

Movie Review
Sonna Puriyadhu (SP) is yet another quintessential Shiva film that is salvaged by few occasional laughs and by the actor himself. All that we got to see from Shiva in films such as Chennai 600028, Tamizh Padam and Thillu Mullu; we see flashes of all of it together in SP. Boasting a wafer thin storyline, SP relies heavily on Shiva, and even though he gives his best but unfortunately we don’t see the film going down as one of Shiva’s best.

The film revolves around Shiva, a dubbing artist for English films, living life happily as a bachelor and never having to worry about getting married. He hates the idea of wedlock and has reasons to stay away from it. However, as they say everyone are bound to end up with a girl we are destined to be with. In Shiva’s case, this girl happens to be Vasundhara Kashyap. How does someone who was interested in the idea of a marriage, eventually gives in to the idea? This forms the rest of the story.

The film might work for Shiva fans as it promises clichéd one-liners intended for the masses. But, I highly doubt if the film would even be close to the idea of entertaining the elite class or even the multiplex goers. The first is half is far better than the following half, which ends up being more of a spoof of comedy scenes from other Tamil films.

Debutant director Krishnan Jayaraj had assisted C.S Amudhan with Tamizh Padam, and one definitely feels the aftertaste of it in SP. The film suffers from lack of originality as Krishnan ends up giving his film nearly the same treatment as many other films featuring Shiva did in the past.

After Santhanam, one of Tamil cinema’s most trusted actor is Shiva. He is not trusted by the audience but by the producers and first-time filmmakers in particular. He had been the lucky charm of several debutant directors in the industry. Krishnan tried to capitalize on that without realizing that not all films featuring the RJ-turned-actor are likely to click at the box-office.

SP isn’t bad overall because for those who might have walked in with least expectations, satisfaction would have partial. The dubbing scenes in the film are super hilarious and these are few moments in the film you can turn a blind eye towards clichés and enjoy to the fullest.

Shiva’s effortless acting and the ease with which he mouths his lines with a touch of sarcasm is fun to watch. Not many can do what he does with the way he speaks his dialogues. It’s a gift and I think he is a natural at it. However, it’s these few moments and Shiva of course holds the film together.

Sonna Puriyadhu is not a full course meal you can guilelessly indulge in. You can consume it in one shot, but I doubt if you can digest it.

Verdict : Just for few laughs

One Movie Review

One  Malayalam Movie Review

Film Name: One
Cast: Jagadish, Vishnu Nandan, Devika Nambiar
Direction: Parthan Mohan
Genre: Horror
Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes

Story: The film is about the spooky events that unfurl in a haunted mansion one night when a group of youngsters get together at the place.

Movie Review: In Parthan Mohan's One there is plenty of dust, cob-webs, shrieks, screams and loads of darkness to typify a ghostly mansion. The film, based on a real-life event that happened in Scotland, shows a group of youths with their teacher reaching a mansion.

It's dark, dusty and derelict. Disconnected phones start blaring, paintings on walls slide upside down, doors get fastened, and articles appear and disappear. Parthan employs all possible ploys to scare his audience. Often he wants his camera to look at his characters from far, almost still, as if somebody is watching them without being noticed.

Most of his frames are drenched in darkness; a natural way to incite fear when instilled with sounds like a deafening scrapping of metal or a squeal. All these could have come out well had it been used with a sense of measure. There are a few scenes where characters act as if they are dumb. At one end gruesome deaths happen with loud noises, while some characters, as though they are deaf, dance in the darkness and check their face on the mirror in the flicker of a candle.

The film's attempts at evoking horror often ends in humour due to the ludicrous acts of its characters.

101 Chodyangal Movie Review

101 Chodyangal Movie Review

Film Name:101 Chodyangal
 Cast: Indrajith, Lena, Minon
Direction: Sidharth Siva
Genre: Family

Story: The film narrates the struggles of a boy whose teacher asks him to frame 101 questions.

Movie Review: 101 Chodyangal follows a boy on a mission. His teacher asks him to frame 101 questions and he only needs to find the questions. His teacher would give answers as well as a rupee for each question the boy asks. Sidharth Siva, while making his debut film, comes up with a sweet tale and narrates it without complexities.

Minon - who plays the lead - is a boy with a natural curiosity perennially inscribed on his face. His friends make fun of him for his queer name - Anil Kumar Bokaro. Each question supposedly evolves from his own life - a rather bleak one with a jobless but loving father, a bed-ridden little sister and a struggling mother. His questions are not ground-breaking ones, but simple queries that he stumbles upon every day.

Sidharth makes it happen without distorting his narrative. The pursuit of questions slowly becomes a frantic search for a meaning in his life. There is a coldness that gradually replaces curiosity on the boy's face; something that juts out of an otherwise simple narrative. What actually mars this seemingly sweet progression is the use of lengthy sequences that leisurely follow the boy walking on the road, running across by-lanes, holding his book carrying the questions.

Indrajith dons the role of his sympathetic, good-hearted teacher, who is slightly stereotyped but warm enough to strike the right chord. There is a struggle for existence which assumes equal significance even with its share of politics. 101 Chodyangal might be chided for the over-play of hazy sentimentalism but this movie stands out for a memorable debut by the director and a brilliant cast.

Loosegalu Movie Review

Loosegalu Kannada Movie Review
Film Name:Loosegalu
Cast: Srimurali, Srikanth, Akul Balaji, Aishwarya Nag, Rekha, Shravya
Direction: Arun
Duration: 2 hours 25 minutes

Movie Review
Debut director Arun has selected a good story with a good script but fails to impress with narration. Though the subject - how greed for money can ruin one's life - is a good theme to deal with, the narration is too slow and many times lengthy keeping you guessing what the director wants to say. The story does not move an inch in many sequences. There is also a need to trim the movie by at least 15 minutes removing some absurd sequences. The director has failed to capture the drama in many sequences effectively.

The story has three heroes - Kabira (Srimurali), Bujji (Srikanth) and Shankara (Akul Balaji). All of them are after money for one reason or the other. The drama begins when Srikanth loots a bank and escapes in the taxi driven by Shankara. Before fleeing, two persons were killed by him in the shooting. Shankara comes to know of the money in the bag and tries to kill Bujji for the money to aid his mother's medical treatment. In the drama that follows, the money bag reaches Kabira who had just come out of the jail. He is in love with Maggie ( Rekha). He kills her and takes away the money bag from her. At last, Kabira, Bujji and Shankara come together and realize that money spoils peace of mind. Another drama breaks out here when Shankara tries to kill Bujji. The twist is that one of the two persons he had killed in the bank was Shankara's lover Milky (Aishwarya Nag). The rest is a drama.

While Akul Balaji's expressions are perfect, Srimurali and Srikanth have done justice to their roles. Aishwarya Nag is stunning with her glamorous looks, Shravya shows promise in acting. It's the debuant music director Vani Harikrishna who wins your heart with some excellent tunes. Cinematography by HK Dayananda is okay.

Teenage Movie Review

Teenage Kannada Movie Review

Film Name: Teenage
Cast: Kishan, Tanvi Lonkar, Apoorva Arora, Priya Bharat Khanna,
Shivadhwaj, Jayashri Raj, Jyothi Reddy, Spoorthi Suresh, Raju Talikote
Direction: HR Srikanth
Genre: Romance
Duration: 2 hours 9 minutes
Movie Review
It's a love story of a schoolboy caught in the web of romance with girls. Director HR Srikanth has done a good job of the script which captures the dilemma of a student who becomes the heart-throb for many girls. The boy is excited, but at the same time comes under pressure in dealing with the situation. There is also drama with each girl he comes in contact with. He also faces rivals in the school who are jealous of his intimacy with the girls. Though the movie is excellent technically, the narration is not that tight and looks ordinary many a times.

Aarya (Kishan) is the heart-throb of many girls in his school. Anjali (Tanvi ( Priya Bharath Khanna), Apoorva Arora (Preethi) and Rosy (TanviLonkar) fall for his beautiful looks and songs. Preethi takes him to her hometown Goa where he meets Rosy. They vie with each other to spend time with Aarya. But the boy is completely in dilemma as he is not able to face the situation. What does he do? There is also a sentimental track where we find Aarya trying to come close to his sister Siri (Shrijit) who is adopted by his aunt from a young age.

After Care of Footpath, Kishan looks matured in acting and impresses as a teenager. Slumdog Millionaire fame Tanvi, Apoorva and Priya are lively. Music director Siddarth Vipin has come out with some foot-tapping energetic numbers. Cinematography by Magesh Dev is excellent.

Mangana Kaili Manikya Movie Review

Mangana Kaili Manikya Kannada Movie Review

Film Name:Mangana Kaili Manikya
Cast: Ramesh Aravind, Harshika Poonacha, Rangayana Raghu,
Ravishankar Gowda, Sanathini, Soniya Gowda, Khushi
Direction: Rajendra Karanth
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes

Rajendra Karanth has proved his talent in his very first movie with good script and narration. He has handled the comedy sequences very
well without giving any room of slackness. Though some dialogues seem to have a double meaning, there is no vulgarity in them. Perhaps,
Karanth could have done a better job of the climax which looks chaotic with too many characters.

The story highlights of how a blind director makes a Kannada movie without revealing his handicap. Manu ( Ramesh Aravind), a film director, is selected by producer Prabhu (Rangayana Raghu) to direct a movie called Kathriguppe. But he becomes blind as he could not face the tension of making the movie. Fearing that he would lose the job, he never reveals his blindness to anyone. He has his assistant Ranganni Ravishankar Gowda). There are excellent comedy sequences like Manu addressing the heroine looking somewhere, approving the shots without looking at the monitor, selecting costumes for the lead roles, etc. But one fine day everyone comes to know that he is blind. Though upset with the turn of events, producer Prabhu tries to cash in on his blindness by making announcement that a blind director is directing his movie. The story takes a curious turn when suddenly Manu regains his eye sight. But that does not help him as he had to act as the blind director so that the publicity he got for the movie is not lost. How does he do it? It is full of comedy sequences.

Full marks to Ramesh for his excellent performance as a blind director. Ravishankar Gowda is equally good in giving life to his
comic character. Harshika Poonacha has given a matured performance, perhaps the best in recent times. Camera by JG Krishna and music by Ramesh Ramanathan pass the muster.

Many shades of Raima Sen

Manoj Michigan, who had the audiences warming up to his debut flick, Damadol, is planning his next — a psycho thriller — with Raima Sen in the lead. "The film revolves around a serial killer and a psychiatrist. Raima loved the story. I want Saswata Chatterjee to play the male lead, but he is yet to go through the script," says Manoj.

Raima, on her part, informs, "It's a gripping story. I play a psychiatrist, who has many shades to her. I have never essayed such a character before. This isn't a regular, urban girl. The role, that way, is extremely challenging."

Issaq Movie Review

Issaq Hindi Movie Review
Film Name: Issaq
Cast: Prateik, Amrya Dastur
Direction: Manish Tiwary
Genre: Romance
Duration: 2 hours 28 minutes

Story: A love story adapted from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set against the backdrop of sand mafia, political power games and Naxalites in Banaras.

Movie Review: Welcome to the holy city of Banaras - replete with 'spesal' paan, levitating smoked-up (on herbs) saadhus, Banarasi babus high on bhaang and others' biwis on un-Holi celebrations. And amidst this colourful backdrop, an age-old feud simmers between two powerful families - The Mishras and the Kashyaps. Mishra son, Rahul (Prateik) - a romantic at heart, (chooses girls over guns); falling madly in love with Kashyap girl Bachchi (Amrya). One tight-chumma is all it takes to win her over (shortcut Romeo, haan?). While the city bleeds with rivalry, enraged Naxals (led by Prashant Narayanan) and political powerplay - the star-crossed lovers defy all rules of bloody war and bravely take on the world. A band of characters add to this drama - Rahul's gori ex-girl (Evelyn Sharma); Teeta (Ravi Kissen - best of the pack) as Bachchi's vicious mamu; sadhu baba (Makarand Deshpande) high on crack; Mishra's lusty doosri biwi (Rajeshwari Sachdev - impressive act), and Rahul's homeboys (Amit Sial and Vineet Kumar Singh - lending strong support).

Prateik doesn't quite fit the part of a Banarasi boy in this tangled love tragedy. His accent doesn't blend in. He air-dives and leaps from terraces and 'Spidermans' his way across walls. His range of emotions remain untapped and inconsistent throughout. Debutante Amrya, as a demure damsel (while unabashedly declaring, 'hum virgin hain' - Holy Mother!), lacks the charisma for her part and ends up looking like a pretty bahu from a tele soap opera.

Manish Tiwary's 'Issaq' lacks vibe, soul or depth needed for a classic love story. With incoherent narrative, unsketched characters, wispy (sometimes embarrassing) dialogues, one good melody in the whole ditty (Issaq tera); pointless shooting (mostly in the dark), gold-plated bandooks and bombs galore - Tiwary misses every target. There are movies beautifully adapted from Shakespeare's works in the past, but none that tragically assault your creative, poetic or cinematic senses.

"Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs ..." - Shakespeare. This love saga leaves us sighing ...

Issaq Movie Review,Issaq  Review,Issaq Movie Rating ,Issaq Movie reIssaq' is supposedly inspired by Shakespeare's famous classic tale of the fateful love story of Romeo and Juliet. 'Issaq'
hat Issaq projects is a completely Bollywoodized view of Benaras. Nothing in this portrait rings true.

Alias Janaki Movie Review

Alias Janaki Telugu Movie Review

Film Name: Alias Janaki
Cast: Rahul Venkat, Anisha Ambrose, Naga Babu, Sathru, Tanikella Bharani
Direction: Daya K
Genre: Drama

Story: Janaki Ram, (Rahul Venkat), son of an idealistic school teacher gets a government job and moves to the city. Disillusioned by the rampant corruption, he stands up to fight for the values instilled by his father.

Movie Review: It is a bizarre turn of events when the cinematography (which seems to have a huge Panjaa hangover about it) and music are more dramatic than the plot, and the narrative flow. To put it simply there is a gaping disconnect between the story and the story telling. In any case how differently can you tell the story of an underdog who rebels against an exploitative system? We've seen too many films with that plotline and even with a non-linear narrative there is hardly any element of surprise per se.

However, we can't fault the debutante filmmaker for not trying, although only partly succeeding in weaving an intense cinema experience. With grim lighting, immersive sound design and skillful camera work, the director creates an intense visual ambience. However, that nuance goes missing in the execution.

The protagonist, Janaki Ram is a reserved good guy who is brought up on staunch ideals in a far away village moves to Hyderabad after getting a job in the GHMC. He is appalled with the immoral ways of the city life. Janaki prevents a local goon, Maisa, from forcefully evacuating slum dwellers and earns his wrath. He soon finds himself framed in false corruption charges and his girlfriend, Chaitra (Anisha) dumps him unable to deal with his moral uprightness. On seeing the hapless slum dwellers being burnt alive by Maisa, he decides to retaliate, for the values he believes in. Then we have a happy ending.

There isn't the usual jingoism like gravity defying action episodes, forced comedy tracks (there is one redundant love track though), punch dialogues and stays reasonably realistic. But the film takes a typically over simplistic look at the whole idea of corruption. Neither does it offer any worthwhile insights into causes and effects of this collective moral degradation in the society at the story level. Neither does it offer any quirky solutions.

It takes the easy way out by playing to the messiah syndrome where we have this righteous Ram like character who goes though the proverbial "angipravesh" (trail by fire) to cleanse the society of it's ills, which is embodied by a menacing looking guy with dreadlocks. So zero points for any philosophical or intellectual integrity there. All the movie has to offer is good intentions. The acting is generally subdued. Rahul Venkat looks like Chiranjeevi in some profile shots, and does a reasonable job of breaking down into tears every now and then, but there isn't anything wow about the performance as such.

Anisha Ambrose has a vivacious screen presence but is just filling up the numbers here. She's the decorative ornament in an otherwise bleak effort. However, with better roles and capable directors, she would do much better. The rest of cast does an ok job. The music is easily the stand out.

Note: It's a little too loaded and preachy, besides some shallow intensity and noble intentions it has nothing much to offer.

Akasamlo Sagam Movie Review

Akasamlo Sagam Telugu Movie Review

Film Name: Akasamlo Sagam
Cast: Ravi Babu, Asha Saini, Posani Krishnamurali, Swetha Basu Prasad
Direction: Prem Raj
Genre: Drama
Movie Review
It's a traumatic marital life for Vasu. The husband is more bothered about his mother and sister but the wife, who does all the household work, feels slightly, insulted, neglected and hurt. Not because she has to do all the work but because her husband is indifferent to her. Add to that the mother-in-law's attempts to play spoilsport. The result: Vasu trips.

Vasu (Asha Saini) has dreams. She's intelligent. Has dreams. And has business sense too. A school teacher, Vasu would have wanted to buy a two-wheeler instead of going in a bus and getting late to school too often but the husband punctures her plans. The man goes to the extent of even slapping her. In a communal riot where the couple are caught, the husband even runs away leaving the wife in a desperate situation.

Help comes in the form of her husband's brother (Ravi Babu) who thoroughly understands Vasu's predicament and comes to her aid. Vasu finds consolation in him but this leads to a physical relationship.

Vasu's husband who comes to know of this confronts her. Vasu accepts her mistake. But then, she decides to push her case and show who drove her into such a situation. She blames her husband's indifference and her brother-in-law taking advantage of her in a weak moment.

The film told in flashback also has Swetha Basu Prasad playing the daughter of Vasu. Saveri (Swetha) is brought up in Mumbai by her single mother and in dramatic circumstances has to tell her story in flashback.

At the best, the film's story as picturised is regressive. The Telugu novel `Anaithikam' penned by Yandamuri is the basis of the story and the movie could surely have done much more to elevate a woman who has been pushed into a difficult situation by circumstances. As mentioned in the introduction of the film, it could be a story that is acted out in the everyday life of many people but the film maker could have brought about a change in the attitude of the family members to become a solace to the victim.

With nothing of that sort shown, the film ends with perhaps a hope that Vasu's daughter would forgive her for her wrong doing. A victim of circumstances may need a helping hand but Vasu had to suffer only condemning eyes staring at her.

Note: You'll yawn
